Your radiator is absolutely essential for the health of your engine. If your radiator is damaged, your engine will overheat. If your engine overheats, serious damage may occur. The longer your engine is too hot, the more extensive the damage will be. Luckily, it is easy to stop the warning signs that your radiator is in need of repair. If you’re not familiar with them, keep reading to discover three signs your Nissan may need a radiator repair

3 Signs Your Nissan May Need a Radiator Repair

1. Your Temperature Gauge Indicates Your Engine Is Hot

The temperature gauge on your dashboard is the clearest sign that your radiator is in serious need of repair. If it is indicating your engine is too hot, turn up the heat in your car as high as it will go. This will reduce the strain put on your radiator and reduce the heat of your engine slightly. As soon as it is safe to do so, pull over. You should turn off your car for at least 15 minutes to give your engine time to cool off.

While you are waiting on your engine to cool off, check the coolant level in the reservoir. If it is low, add coolant to your reservoir. If you don’t have any coolant in your car, fill it with water. If you don’t have any water, call a friend to bring you some or drive with your heat running as high as it will go to keep your engine cooler.

2. Your Coolant Level Is Low

A low coolant level is another sign that your radiator may need to be repaired. If your coolant level is low, you probably have a leak in your reservoir somewhere. Unfortunately, if you don’t have enough coolant in your reservoir, your radiator can’t do its job. If your radiator can’t do its job, your engine will overheat and become damaged.

It is important to have the source of the leak identified and repaired as quickly as possible. In the meantime, keep coolant in your car so you can top up your coolant if your engine overheats while you’re driving.

3. Your Exhaust Is Blowing White Smoke

If a great deal of white smoke is coming out of your exhaust, you have a coolant leak that has made its way into your combustion chamber. It is absolutely crucial to bring your vehicle in for a repair if you notice your exhaust blowing white smoke. If you ignore the leak for too long, there will not be enough coolant in the reservoir to keep your engine cool. This will result in the need for both radiator and engine repairs.

If you keep your radiator in good working order, your engine will not overheat. Keeping your engine from getting too hot significantly reduces the chance of serious damage. You should not put off a repair if you notice any of the aforementioned signs of a malfunctioning radiator.
